A Review of Event Deposits in Lake Sediments

چکیده

Event deposits in lake sediments provide invaluable chronicles of geodynamic and climatic natural hazards on multi-millennial timescales. Sediment archives are particularly useful for reconstructing high-impact, low-frequency events, which rarely observed instrumental or historical data. However, attributing a trigger mechanism to event can be challenging as different types events produce with very similar lithological characteristics, such turbidites. In this review paper, we summarize the state art paleolimnology. We start by describing sedimentary facies typical floods, glacial outburst avalanches, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, spontaneous delta collapses. then describe most indicative methods that applied at scale basins (geophysical survey, multiple coring) sediment cores (sedimentology, inorganic organic geochemistry, biotic approach). Finally, recommendations how obtain accurate chronologies containing deposits, ultimately date events. Accurately identifying dating has potential improve hazard assessments, terms return periods, recurrence patterns, maximum magnitudes, is one main geological challenges sustainable worldwide development.

Bottom Sediments of Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua, Western Nicaragua

Lakes Nicaragua and Managua are large, rather shallow, fresh-water bodies that lie in a late Tertiary and Quaternary graben in western Nicaragua. The bottom sediments comprise highly organic diatomaceous volcanic silts and clays in which quartz plagioclase feldspar, dioctahedral montmorillonite and volcanic glass are the principal constituents. ' Organic nitrogen content of the lake sediments r...

Palynological study of Lake Kotokel’ bottom sediments (Lake Baikal region)

Pollen and AMSC analyses of bottom sediments from the upper nine meters of the Lake Kotokel’ section were carried out. The regional climate and landscape dynamics during the Late Glacial and Holocene has been reconstructed with an average time resolution of ~120 years. It is shown that the climatic conditions in the Kotokel’ basin during Termination I (~15.5–11 ka) were characterized by short d...

Seasonal signals in Lake Malawi sediments

The sedimentary record of Lake Malawi, one of the large rift valley lakes of east Africa, contains thick sequences of biologically undisturbed, finely laminated muds and silts. Laminated sequences were recovered in cores from the extensive diatom ooze and silty diatom clay facies of the lake basin that is permanently anoxic below 250 m. The sequences consist of light-dark laminae couplets with ...
